The Canvas Factory

The Canvas Factory information

Canvas bags and accessories, crafted in both traditional and modern materials for home, boat and outdoor activities.  Our canvas bags are made out of 100% cotton canvas available in red, royal blue, green, olive, black, tan, yellow and natural. The dyed canvas is colour fast and water proofed.  We use heavy duty sail makers thread, solid brass eyelets and heavy duty zips.  All of our bags can be customised mixing the different canvas colours and webbings available.  We also make awnings, balcony screens, deck cushions, sail covers and many custom made items for boats and patios using weather proof acrylic canvas.  Most, but not all of the products shown on this site are made in house.  We also offer Onyabags, Kipling bags, Tilley Hats,  Fisherman's Smocks, Nikwax products,  bespoke ropework, Boatie Frying Pans and other select items

History

The Canvas Factory started when Doug Briscoe, after his circumnavigation, brought ashore his industrial Singer and started making bags and covers in his garage.  After selling the boat, good day/bad day, he moved into the present location at 5 Foss St. Dartmouth.  The 'high street' shop has lots of interesting canvas bags and accessories and other carefully selected goods. The crew has grown; we not only make cotton canvas goods but also make awnings, sail covers, outdoor furniture covers, patio sun awnings, sail shaped blinds in weather proof acrylic canvas. We also offer the chance to design your own bags mixing the canvases and the colourful webbings available.  The list is endless, please e-mail with your ideas or come by the shop when visiting the beautiful port of Dartmouth.

Last August Jayne, who has worked for Doug on and off for over 11 years, and Joe her partner, came back to Dartmouth after a year travelling through the French canals on their Heard 28 sailing boat.  Sadly, this coincided wth Doug becoming ill. Jayne was able to run the Canvas Factory during the winter as Doug had his treatment for cancer.  Jayne and Joe were able to buy the business from Doug and his wife, Alison and have been running the business since April 2008.

Sadly we lost Doug this June.  He was happy knowing that his business would continue and that Jayne would keep his ideas and ethos alive.  Jayne and the Canvas Factory Crew; Val, Marilyn and Amanda still make all the canvas products on site and are introducing some new fabrics to the traditional bags. We can also offer bespoke fancy rope work including doorstops, bannister ropes, light pulls, dog leads etc all made here in Devon. We will be re-designing the web site with new up-to-date pictures this winter.
